November - December 2017 Volume 186 THE  PRESENT  DRIFT, ... IS  REALLY  THE  PAST  DESERTION! Jeremiah 6:16 Thus saith the LORD, stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls.  But they said, We will not walk therein.   In the book of Jeremiah chapter 6 we find the prophet Jeremiah's second sermon, which deals strongly with disobedience and destruction.   This chapter could be effortlessly outlined like this: I.  The  Watchman. (verses 1-5) II.  The  Physician. (verses 6-15) III.  The  Guide. (verses 16-25) IV.  The  Assayer. (verses 26-30) It is while the prophet Jeremiah is dealing (under the direct inspiration of the Holy Spirit) with "The Guide" that a person learns that Biblical history often repeats itself. (verse 16)   G. Campbell Morgan once wrote about our text: "He (Jeremiah) appealed to the past to bear witness, but they would not attend.  He appealed directly to the present, and they would not hearken." Never forget, the compromise of today, is simply the capitulation of yesteryear. Friend, you and I need to understand the hallmarks of this hour! There are three truths about the present drift the Christian must learn from the past desertion:  (All found in Jeremiah 6:16) !.  THE  OBVIOUS  REQUEST. A truth about the present drift the Christian must learn from the past desertion is the obvious request.  ("Thus saith the LORD, stand ye in the ways and see,")  Three simple phrases keep the child of God from being in the dark, by A DECLARATION, A LOCATION, and AN OBSERVATION to what God desires of them.  Follow the Book, "THUS SAITH THE LORD" and you'll find the blessing! (Joshua 1:8)  The obvious request! II.  THE  OLD  ROAD. A truth about the present drift the Christian must learn from the past desertion is the old road. ("and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls")  Nowhere on the ancient avenue is contemporary methods or carnal music. "LANDMARKS" don't come with rollers or wheels. (Prov. 22:28)  The old road! III.  THE  OPEN  REBELLION. A truth about the present drift the Christian must learn from the past desertion is the open rebellion. ("But they said, We will not walk therein.")  Don't be stupefied when some believers trade their fundamentalist fighting gear for liberal leisure wear.  The revolt of this moment should only cause more resolve among many of God's people. (Hebrews 13:13)  The open rebellion!
